MARK YOUR AUDITION CALENDARS FOR FEBRUARY 13th/15th!

Landmark Musical Theatre proudly announces auditions for the Bay area premiere of THE BOY FROM OZ, the Tony award-winning Broadway musical based on the life of famed Australian songwriter and performer Peter Allen, who wrote or co-wrote many well-known popular songs, including:

  • I Honestly Love You (Olivia Newton-John)
  • Don't Cry Out Loud (Melissa Manchester)
  • The Academy award-winning Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do) from the film Arthur

These tunes and 20 others are featured in this song-and-dance-filled production, which also includes many people from Allen's life, including Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli (his spouse for seven years) and his long-time lover and partner Greg Connell.

The role of Judy Garland is precast (see below); all other roles are open.

We Are Seeking... Men and women, age 18+, for lead and ensemble roles including Peter Allen, Liza Minnelli, Greg Connell, Marion Woolnough (Peter's mother), Mark Herron (Judy Garland's husband), plus one boy 10-14 as young Peter. Most ensemble members double in various supporting acting roles. All performers must be strong actors and singers, and the ensemble (as well as Allen and Minnelli) should be strong dancers. Allen should ideally be able to speak with a reasonable Australian accent. Young Peter must be able to tap, and acrobatic skills would be a strong plus.

When... Saturday, Feb. 13, 2:30-5:30 PM and Monday, Feb. 15, 7:00-10:00 PM

Where... Great Star Theater, 636 Jackson Street, San Francisco (½ block from Kearny)

Callbacks... Thursday, February 18, and possibly Saturday, February 20 (locations TBA)

Rehearsals... begin February 29, 2016; all rehearsals will be scheduled on Monday-Thursday evenings, Saturday morning or afternoon and Sunday afternoon or evening. No rehearsals on Friday or Saturday night. Maximum 3 hour rehearsals weekday evenings, 4 hours on weekends until tech week (starts April 16); 4-a-week for the first four weeks of rehearsal, then 5-a-week until tech week. Most performers will not be called for all rehearsals until the week before tech week. Final rehearsal schedule will be provided after casting, subject to adjustment for performer conflicts provided at auditions. All rehearsals will be held in San Francisco.

Performances... 14 performances at the Great Star Theater, April 23-May 15, 2016, Thu/Fri/Sat at 8 PM and Sun at 2 PM.

You must be available for ALL performances and rehearsals starting April 16.

Compensation... The Boy From Oz is a non-AEA production. Landmark Musical Theatre offers a stipend to all performers.

Please note: if you are an Actors' Equity member interested in the role of Peter Allen (only), please contact us as there is the possibility of entering into an Equity guest artist or other special AEA agreement for the right actor. Equity members may only audition with the permission of AEA.

Audition Attendance... You only need to attend one of the audition dates. There will be two groups for each audition: early (the first hour-and-a-half) and late (the last hour-and-a-half). The first hour of each group will be assigned to vocals and the last half hour to dance. Walk-ins will be accommodated if possible, but reservations are highly recommended. Walk-ins must arrive at least 45 minutes before closing.

Audition Reservation Requests... Please email requests for an audition reservation to audition@landmarkmusicals.com. Please indicate your first and second preferences for both the date (February 13 or February 15) and group (early or late). If possible, please attach a PDF, JPEG or MS Word document of your resume and headshot (and then you do not need to provide those documents at the auditions).

Audition Preparation

Vocals: Please prepare a popular, standard or a musical theater song in the style of the era (1960s through 1980s) of approximately 32 bars. An accompanist will be provided (no a capella auditions will be permitted). Please bring sheet music in the correct key as the accompanist may not be able to do key transpositions. Please do not sing any song from the show (a song list can be found on the audition page at our website).

Dance: Please be prepared to dance (wear or bring appropriate shoes and clothing) as your vocal audition will be followed by a short dance audition.

Monologue/Dialog: Please do NOT prepare a monologue. Dialog auditions will be held at callbacks. However, you may be asked to read a short “cold” monologue from the script at your initial audition. Men interested in the role of Peter Allen may be asked to do an Australian accent.

Paperwork: Please bring a head shot and resume (if you did not submit it with your audition reservation request). If you do not have a good head shot, we will take a digital photo for reference. Please bring your complete schedule (as of the audition date) for the months of March, April and May, 2016, in order to provide us with your conflict information. We are able to be flexible with our final rehearsal schedule, but we need to have all of your conflict information in advance.

Theatre Bay Area General Auditions... Landmark casting representatives will also be attending the Theatre Bay Area General Auditions January 30-31. Please let us know if you are participating in those auditions when you write to us. We will watch for you!

Featured Artist... We are very excited to announce that popular local singer/actor Connie Champagne will be featured in the role of Judy Garland. She is well-known for her uncanny depiction of Garland in such productions as Christmas at the Crawfords and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. About her performance in the off-Broadway production of Christmas at the Crawfords at the Chelsea Theatre, the New York Times said “Ms. Champagne's Judy Garland is a subtle masterpiece of parody and homage.”
